Your BMW A/C may need a recharge if it blows warm air, cools weakly, or cools less than before. However, low refrigerant usually indicates a leak or another system problem, so diagnosis should come before simply adding refrigerant.
A recharge means the A/C system is restored to the correct refrigerant amount. Refrigerant is sealed inside the system and should not normally run low. If your BMW needs a recharge, the shop should first determine why the refrigerant level is low before adding refrigerant.
Symptoms related to a BMW A/C needing a recharge
- Air from the vents is cool but not cold.
- A/C blows warm air on hot days.
- Cooling improves while driving but weakens at idle.
- The A/C takes too long to cool the cabin.
- The system clicks on and off more often than usual.
- A hissing sound from the dashboard area.
- Windows fog more than normal. Recharge worked before, but cooling faded again.
A typical BMW A/C recharge may range from about $200* to $450* for many R-134a systems and about $300* to $650* for many R-1234yf systems. If leak testing or repairs are needed, the total cost can be higher.
