There is no exact mileage when a timing belt on German autos will break. Some belts fail early due to oil or coolant contamination, poor tension, faulty pulleys, defective parts, or harsh operating conditions. Others last beyond the recommended interval, but that does not make the risk acceptable.
The recommended schedules for the major German auto brands include the following:
Volkswagen & Audi (VAG): Typically requires replacement every 60,000 to 100,000 miles or 5 to 7 years, whichever comes first. For example, many older 1.8L and 2.0L engines require service at 75k-80k miles, while newer models have intervals pushed to 100k miles. Mechanics often advise changing the water pump at the same time.*
BMW: Most modern BMWs (and many MINI Coopers) use timing chains instead of belts, which are designed to last the lifetime of the engine. However, older models utilizing belts typically required replacement between 60,000 and 90,000 miles.*
Mercedes-Benz: Similar to BMW, Mercedes-Benz relies heavily on timing chains across its vehicle lineup. For older or specific models that did feature belts, replacement intervals were generally set at 60,000 to 90,000 miles.*
Porsche: Intervals vary wildly by performance model, ranging from 45,000 miles for heavily tracked/high-performance models up to 90,000 miles for standard daily drivers, or a maximum of 6 years depending on the model.*
*Note: these examples should be verified by checking the maintenance manual and checking for update bulletins from the manufacturer.
Once a belt is past its service interval, the chance of failure rises because the rubber and internal structural cords have aged through thousands of revolutions and heat cycles. If the mileage is unknown, assume the belt is due until service records prove otherwise. Preventive replacement is cheaper than failure, especially for interference engines with expensive internal engine components.
